Etruscan intaglio ring
Description
A fine 6th century BC Etruscan large intaglio banded agate ring stone of a soldier holding an unidentified staff like object, he is looking down at a severed head on the ground. There are several similar known intaglios of this subject always on banded agate. The subject carved into these gems is sometimes thought to represent Hermes collecting the dead to escort them down to Hades, but I have my doubts as to whether this attribution is correct.
The ring stone is large and in this case, the ring was remounted in sheet gold in the Roman times circa 1st to 2nd century AD as they were like us great collectors of ancient intaglios.
