Intaglio Ring of cupid riding a Phallus
Description
A rock crystal Roman intaglio of Cupid riding a phallus set in a modern 18ct gold ring size N, the intaglio is of very fine quality even down to cupid having facial features it dates to between the 1st and 2nd century AD. The subject was popular in Roman jewellery, especially for its links to love and romance.
Phallic imagery in Roman art was believed to ward off the evil eye and protect against witchcraft.
